Impressive at the depth she finished fifth. Van Bilien had the second fastest time of the year too.

My personal opinion...Canada is not such a powerhouse to afford to let a WR holder out of the team after a one-day only selection...they should find different (European style) criteria to make the team...and they will benefit a lot from that...

P.S. Don't forget the daily wrap-up in the "Swimming International News 2012" thread...

We do in 200m Breaststroke for whatever reason, though I agree with you this qualification system is pretty terrible.  Swimming Canada expects swimmers to get OQT standards in March and I'm not even sure what is going to happen to the 4x200m relay since the four didn't qualify.

I would normally agree with you phelps because Canada has so few legit medal threats in the pool that keeping a WR holder at home sounds insane.  However, that WR is almost 3 years old and to my knowledge she hasn't come close to it since due to serious illness and injury.  But I will agree holding a one day trial so early in the year may not be the best way to select our strongest swimmers.  Mike Brown, who finished 4th in Beijing, will also stay home.  The good news is Canada has a few chances at medals in the pool which is more than we could say in either Beijing or Athens.

Well, last year in Shanghai Pierse entered the 200m Breast Final with the 4th best time and if she would have been able to repeat herself, the same clocking would have given her the Bronze Medal ahead of Martha McCabe (but unfortunately, she was only 8th and last that day)...so, it's not so far away in the calendar the last time she showed herself competitive at the highest level in the World...
In any case, that's Canada's rule...and we all have to accept it...if the athletes themselves don't complain with those rules, for sure it won't be me nor you nor anyone else from "the outside" that will make them change their mind...

Update, except for the Canadian athletes who only have OST times and France's Women's 100m Medley Relay because they don't have a spot yet.

At Wikipedia page there is information that one bosnian swimmer has achived OQT. I diddnt find that info here, so does anybody know is it true or not?

Ensar Hajder has achieved the OST in 200m individual medley about a month ago, but I don't know of anyone who achieved the OQT.
